How To Stop Eating Junk Food

Why are you craving junk food?

If your blood sugar is not under control, you will crave anything and everything you can imagine. So first things first – try to get your blood sugar under control. That is step one!

The problem with Diabetes Type 1, is that your body is not producing or producing very little insulin and none of what you eat is being stored. So you are basically is starvation mode and your body keeps craving so that you will feed it. Make sense?

Besides that, junk food can be addictive. We tend to crave junk food more than healthy food because junk food is carefully formulated so that we keep coming back for more.

What happens if you eat junk food all the time?

Processed food is not good for you! You miss out on all the nutrients you need to function at your best. You get sugars, trans fats and sodium. And as a result you end up with breakouts, bloating, constipation, frequent bad moods, and weight gain.

How to stop eating junk food

Control your blood sugar

Keep your blood sugar readings consistent to begin with. Aim for between 4 – 6 mol and if you are not there, it’s okay. You will get there! Don’t beat yourself up. We all know how temperamental Diabetes Type 1 can be.

Eating less junk food means less cravings

This only applies if your blood sugar is under control. The less artificial ingredients you are exposed to, the less you will crave them. I am not saying you should go cold turkey,but if you can that would be amazing but if you gradually cut junk food from your diet, you will notice yourself craving it less and less.

Manage your stress

Two words – stress eating! If you manage your stress levels, you won’t find yourself grabbing for that terrible junk food.  Being stressed can cause certain parts of the brain to release specific chemicals such as opiates and neuropeptide Y, which can trigger cravings for fat and sugar.

Why not destress by taking a walk or a quick meditation or even a little yoga session.

Balanced meal plan

Create a balanced low carb meal plan for yourself. I don’t mean eat only salads for the rest of your life but keep your food options open. There are so many recipes you can try to get all your nutrients in.

Being healthy is not boring! It’s exciting to watch your body react to all the good food you give it. You owe it to yourself to look after your body.

Don’t buy unhealthy foods

Make yourself a shopping list before you go into a store and stick to it! You don’t need junk foo on hand for cheat day as you will find you won’t need cheat days when you are eating healthy as you won’t be craving. It all works hand in hand.Out of sight, out of mind is the way to go. If you don’t have something to tempt you in the first place, you are less likely to have a binge on unhealthy foods.
