How to treat a cut when you have Diabetes Type 1
Put pressure on the wound or cut for about 10 minutes, or until the bleeding stops.
Clean the wound with soap or dettol and warm water and remove any foreign material. Apply a first aid antibiotic ointment to help prevent infection and keep the wound moist.
Cover the area with a bandage, like gauze or band-aid/plaster, to keep it clean.
Go to the doctor ASAP if:
– it looks like the cut may need stitches
– you experience any numbness or difficulty moving the affected area
– If the area turns black or starts losing normal color
Always remember as a Diabetic Type 1 Survivor you need to maintain healthy and normal blood sugars. If your blood sugar is constantly high, your body has a harder time trying to repair itself. This could lead to loss of limbs and you do not want that!!
