What Superfoods you already have at home

Superfood refers to a food that is nutritionally rich and packs a punch with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants or polyphenols (micronutrients that help to prevent damage caused by free radicals).

Surprisingly these are foods you most likely already have in your kitchen, without even realizing they are superfoods.


This orange veggie is a source of alpha-carotene and beta-carotene, antioxidants which can help to reduce free radical damage and may help to prevent cancer. Pumpkins are also naturally high in fibre and vitamin A. And best of all they do not affect blood sugar very drastically. which means you won’t need that much insulin for it.


I add lemon slices to the water I drink daily. It just gives it such a refreshing taste but it can also help increase the amount of iron your body absorbs! Because of the vitamin C lemon contains, it can help to keep your immune system strong too. Just don’t overdo this one as there are hidden sugars in lemons which might affect blood sugar.


I personally have blueberries every morning with 100ml greek yoghurt and low carb granola. Berries are packed with vitamins and antioxidants, berries (such as strawberries, blueberries, raspberries or blackberries).

Nuts and seeds

Nuts and seeds are packed with heart-healthy fats, as well as vitamins and minerals. Nuts and seeds are great for snacking on, adding to salads or mixing into your stir fry! Again, please don’t go over board with nuts as they will affect your blood sugar. So limit yourself to less than a small handful.


Avocado has healthy fats, dietary fibre and so many other nutrients! Eat them as is out the shell or mashed as guacamole or on a fathead bread.


Broccoli is rich in vitamin A, which will help boost your immune system. It also helps support healthy vision and reduce the risk of heart disease. Broccoli also provides your body with folic acid and vitamin C, a combination which has been linked to reduced risk of stroke and some types of cancer. And as a bonus, broccoli does not affect blood sugar reading as much as other veggies.
